DIY: Handmade Clay Trays

These are a great gift and so easy to create! Made out of oven-bake clay and customizable. A fun and useful project.

You will need: oven-bake clay, cookie or biscuit cutters, stamps, shells and a rolling pin.

You will need: oven-bake clay, cookie or biscuit cutters, stamps, dried urchins/shells, rolling pin and a flat, smooth surface. I used a marble cheese plate.

Pinch off about and inch of the clay and roll into a smooth ball. Roll out into a flat circle, even thickness. If you mess up, just roll into a ball again - the clay is very forgiving.

Cut circles with smooth or scalloped edges of a biscuit cutter.

Place the bottom of a glass on the clay and wrap around the sides of the glass. This is for the stamped versions. I used two different dried sea urchins for the "ocean" trays.

For the stamped version: place the bottom of a glass in the center of the clay circle and wrap around the sides of the glass. Or wrap clay around objects such as dried urchins or shells.

Don't forget to finish the edges. I used the urchin and a hairband - be creative and use whatever you like. The clay won't stick to anything.

The trays are perfect given as sets, here are some examples:

Use cute, simple animals stamps for kids trays.

These French travel stamps are perfect for a more sophisticated look, use the scalloped edges for a finished look.

You can use any kind of shell to wrap clay around, but I love the texture these urchins impress upon the clay.
