DIY: Mini Vegetable Garden

My first memory of growing food comes from childhood visits to my grandparents’ home in Germany. They grew all their own vegetables in huge plots in the backyard and the cellar was always  full of canned pickles and wooden crates filled with potatoes. I’ve always grown vegetables myself, but on a much smaller scale. Here are some pictures of my new raised beds. They are easy to build and contain a nice variety of lettuces and vegetables (and a couple of cosmos plants, too –  my favorite flower).

It all started with a trip to the local lumber yard. I used cedar (redwood is also a great choice) and had the wood cut to build 2 six foot by three and a half foot beds.

Grow what you like! In my previous garden I planted too many peppers. This year I’m growing more green beans and two new varieties of cucumbers.

Location, location, location! I picked a site that will get 6-8 hours of sunlight and is close to my kitchen.

Here are the finished and planted beds – we are looking forward to our first harvest!
